History
In 1841, Dr. David Waldo from Gasconade County, Missouri, was convinced by some friends to buy land in Jackson County, Missouri. Dr. Waldo bought 1,000 acres (4.0 km 2 ) that ran from what is now Gregory to 91st Street and State Line to Holmes.
In 1860 a rail line was established between Westport and Dodson, and the main stop was at Waldo. When the railroad converted into a street car in 1907, a brick station was built at the Waldo site, and came to be known as Grand Central Wald Station. Waldo was annexed by Kansas City in 1909, which pushed the southern city limits from 49th Street to 77th Street. Businesses began to grow around the station, including Elmer Family Grocery store and Milen Drygoods. As growth continues, the Waldo area becomes a major traffic artery in southern Kansas City. The houses on Wornall Road south to 75th Street served as a path for continued business expansion in the 1930s.
The Waldo Water Tower, located near 75th and Holmes, is a local landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
