Plot

Mattie Ross's father was killed by Tom Chaney when he was 14 years old. While collecting his father's corpse at Fort Smith, Arkansas, Mattie asked the local sheriff about Chaney's quest. She tells him that Chaney has fled with "Lucky" Ned Pepper and his gang to the Indian Territory, where the sheriff has no authority, so he asks about hiring a US Marshal. The sheriff gave three recommendations, and Mattie chose Rooster Cogburn. Cogburn initially refused his offer, did not believe he had the money to hire him, but he increased his money by aggressively trading horses with Colonel Stonehill.

Texas Ranger LaBoeuf arrived in town, chasing Chaney for the murder of a Texas State Senator. LaBoeuf proposed to join Cogburn, but Mattie refused his offer. He wished Chaney was hanged in Arkansas for his father's murder, not in Texas for killing senators. Mattie also insisted on traveling with Cogburn but she left without her, leaving with LaBoeuf to capture Chaney and share her prize.

After refusing to travel on the ferry carrying Cogburn and LaBoeuf, Mattie crossed the river on horseback. LaBoeuf expressed his displeasure by hitting Mattie with a stick, but Cogburn eventually allowed Mattie to accompany them. After a dispute over their respective services with the Confederate Army, Cogburn ends their arrangement and LaBoeuf goes to chase Chaney himself. Cogburn and Mattie meet the trace doctor who directs them to an empty resting place for cover. They find two criminals, Quincy and Moon, and interrogate them. Quincy insists they have no information about the Pepper gang, but finally Moon reveals what he knows; Quincy fatal stabbed the Moon, and Cogburn shot Quincy dead. Before he died, Moon said Pepper and his gang would be back for the horse that night.

LaBoeuf arrives in the dugout and is confronted by a Pepper gang. Cogburn, hiding on the hillside with Mattie, shot two gang members and accidentally hit LaBoeuf, but Pepper escaped. However, Cogburn and LaBoeuf argued the next day, and the last set off again. Taking water from the river, Mattie meets Chaney. He shoots him, but he persists and drags him back to Pepper, who forces Cogburn to leave by threatening to kill him. Pepper leaves Mattie himself with Chaney, ordering him not to harm her or he will not be paid after her remounts arrive.

Chaney tries Mattie's knife, but LaBoeuf shows up and knocks Chaney out. They watched from a distance as Cogburn fought with the remaining members of the Pepper gang, killing two and wounding Ned before his horse was shot and fell, trapping his feet, where LaBoeuf snipes Pepper. Chaney regains consciousness and knocks out LaBoeuf, but Mattie grabs LaBoeuf's gun and shoots Chaney in the chest. The recoil threw him into a deep hole, where he was bitten by a rattlesnake. Cogburn cut off his hand to suck as much of the poison as possible, then riding day and night to reach the doctor, taking him on foot after his horse fainted from exhaustion.

Mattie's left arm was amputated because of gangrene from a snake bite. Cogburn survives until he's out of danger, but leaves before he regains consciousness. He never saw Cogburn or LaBoeuf again, though he wrote a letter inviting Cogburn to collect the money he owed him. Twenty-five years later, he received a letter from Cogburn inviting him to a traveling Wild West show where he is now working. He arrived, only to find out that he had died three days earlier. He has his body moved to his family's funeral. Standing on Cogburn's grave, he reflects on his decision to move his body, and about never getting married, and possibly seeing LaBoeuf again.

Adaptation and production

The project is rumored as far back as February 2008; However it was not confirmed until March 2009.

On the eve of the filming, Ethan Coen said that the film would be a more faithful novel adaptation than the 1969 version.

This is partly a matter of point of view. The book is entirely in the voice of a 14-year-old girl. It's kind of tipping that feeling over a certain way. I think [the book] is more funny than the movie so I think, unfortunately, they lost a lot of humor in both the situation and the sound. It also ended up different from the movie. You see the main character - little girl - 25 years later when she grew up. Another way in which it is slightly different from the movie - and maybe this is just because the time the movie was made - is that it's much harder and cruel than the reflected film. That is part of what is interesting about it.

Mattie Ross "is a pill," Ethan Coen said in an interview in December 2010, "but there is something very fascinating about it in the book we attract to", including a deeply imbued Presbyterian-Protestant ethic in the 14-year-old woman. Joel Coen says that you do not want to "mess up what we think is a very interesting story and character". Film producer Scott Rudin says that Coens has taken a "formal and respectful approach" to the Western genre, with an emphasis on adventure and search. "The patois of the characters, the love of language that permeates the entire film, makes it very similar to their other films, but that is the most ironic in many ways".

Nevertheless, there is a subtle way in which the film adaptation differs from the original novel. This is very clear in the negotiating scenes between Mattie and her father. In the film, Mattie offers her father's coffin and starts spending the night among the corpses to avoid paying boarding house. This scene is, in fact, absent in the novel, in which Mattie is described as resisting bargaining over her father's body, and never thinking of sleeping among the corpses.

An open casting session was held in Texas in November 2009 for the role of Mattie Ross. The following month, Paramount Pictures announces a casting search for girls aged 12 to 16, describing the character as "a simple and tough young woman," who is "very nervous and easily seen often surprisingly". Steinfeld, then 13 years old, was selected for the role of 15,000 applicants. "That, as you may be able to imagine, the source of much anxiety", Ethan Coen told The New York Times . "We realize if the child is not working, there is no movie".

The film was taken in the Santa Fe area, New Mexico, in March and April 2010, as well as in Granger and Austin, Texas. The first trailer was released in September; a second trailer aired with The Social Network.

For the final segment of the film, a double-armed body is required for Elizabeth Marvel (who plays Mattie adult). After the national call, the Coen brothers tossed Ruth Morris - a social worker and a 29-year-old student born without a left arm. Morris has more time in movies than Marvel.

Release

box office

On a holiday weekend after the North American debut on December 22, True Grit took $ 25.6 million at the box office, twice its pre-release projection. On the second weekend ending January 2, the film has grossed $ 87.1 million domestically, becoming the best-selling Coen brothers, exceeding No Country for Old Men , which earned $ 74.3 million. True Grit is the only mainstream film of the 2010 holiday season that surpasses producer earnings expectations. Based on that performance, The Los Angeles Times predicted that the film is likely to become the second highest-grossing country of all time when inflation is discounted, surpassed only by Dancing with Wolves . On Thursday, December 23, 2010, it was opened for No. 3 behind Little Fockers and Tron: Legacy . On Friday, December 24, 2010, up to No. 2 behind the Little Fockers. On Friday, December 31, 2010, up to No. 1 and then on January 1, 2011, it returned to No. 1. 2 to 3 January 2011. Stay No. 1 to 14 January and then down to No 3 behind The Green Hornet and Dilemma. On February 11, 2011, it's down to No. 9 behind Justin Bieber: Never Say Never , Just Go With This , Gnomeo and Juliet The Eagle , The Roommate The King's Speech , No Strings Attached , and Sanctum . It closed in theaters on April 28, 2011. True Grit took an additional $ 15 million in what is usually a slow month for movie attendance, reaching $ 110 million. According to Box Office Mojo, True Grit has grossed more than $ 170 million domestically and $ 250 million worldwide in July 2011.

Both Paramount's brother and Vice Chairman Rob Moore attributed the success of the film in part to the "soft" rating of PG-13, unusual for the Coen brothers, which helped broaden the audience's appeal. Paramount anticipates that the film will be popular among adults who are often the core audience of the Coen brothers, as well as fans of Western genres. But True Grit also attracts big families: parents, grandparents, and teenagers. Geographically, the film plays most strongly in Los Angeles and New York, but the top 20 markets also include Oklahoma City; Plano, Texas; and Olathe, Kansas.

Critical reception

True Grit received critical acclaim. Roger Ebert gives 3.5 stars out of 4, writes, "What strikes me is that I portray stories and movies as if they were just, if awesome, a good westerner. It surprised me, because this is a movie by Coen Brothers , and this is the first straight-through practice in their careers. This is a loving work, their skill is a miracle ", and also commented," Cinematography by Roger Deakins reminds us of the glory that exists, and can still be, the West. "

Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan gave the film 4 out of 5 stars, writing, "The Coens, unknown to soften anything, has restored the original gloomy and gloomy conclusion and as the writer-director has come. with a version that shares the show with the first movie but closer to the book... Clearly acknowledging the same passion in Portis, sharing his love for eccentric characters and odd languages, they work hard, and succeed in serving light and true novels for their own black comics. "

In his review for Minneapolis Star Tribune Colin Covert writes: "Coens rotate eccentricity and deliver the first classically created genre image, which pleases the audience. The results are excellent." Richard Corliss of Time calls Hailee Steinfeld's performance as one of the Top 10 Movie Show 2010, saying "He gives orotund dialogue as if it were the easiest language, staring at the bad guy, winning the heart. true ".

Rex Reed of the New York Observer criticized the pacing of the film, referring to the plot points as "mere distractions... to distract from the fact that nothing happened elsewhere". Reed considers Damon "misdirected" and finds Bridges' performance weak, sluggish, and indulgent. Entertainment Weekly gave the movie B: "More true than the John Wayne display and less than the book, this True Grit is good enough to leave movie lovers thirsty for missing spices."

The Episcopal Bishops' Review of the Bishop of the United States called the film "very good" and said "[a] the middle of its archetypal characters, mythical atmosphere and ridiculous dialogue, the authors of Joel and the drama drew Ethan Coen using a sensitive heroine perspective - as well as numerous biblical references and religion enough - to reflect seriously on the rough currents of border life ".

Rotten Tomatoes reported that 96% of critics gave positive reviews on the movie based on 263 reviews, with an average score of 8.4/10 and with consensus stating: "Leaned by strong appearances from Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, and picked up by Coen's most finely tuned and unaffected works, True Grit is a worthy companion for Charles Portis's book. "Metacritic gave this movie an average score of 80/100 based on 41 reviews from the main critics, who shows "favorable public reviews". Total Film gave this movie a five-star review (which shows 'amazing'): "This is not a remake as a remarkable remake. Not only a decline in the 1969 version, it was the first great movie of 2011".
