Checked baggage refers to luggage sent to airlines or trains for transportation in airplanes or passenger car trunk cars, which means inaccessible to passengers during flight or ascending. The opposite of checked baggage is portable baggage.

This baggage is limited by the airline regarding the size, weight, and number, usually depending on the fee paid, or the ticket class. Overdue baggage is considered as excess baggage .

Registered baggage policies

Each airline has its own policy regarding baggage allowance. Often policies also depend on where the flight comes or comes. Tickets executed by many airlines may have different rules. Usually the exact conditions of a particular booking are mentioned in the online ticket information.

On short-haul internal flights within the US, with a few exceptions, checked baggage is no longer free with most discounted economy tickets, and must be paid in addition to ticket prices; passengers should normally have a higher or full economy ticket, travel in a premium cabin, or hold an elite status in an airline for free baggage allowance. For long-haul and cross-ocean flights, checked baggage is included as standard.

Low cost airlines like Ryanair in Europe and AirAsia in Asia are charged for checked baggage, while for full-service airlines, the fee is included in the ticket price.

Reconcile baggage passengers

According to the rules of most air transport authorities, such as the US Federal Aviation Administration and the EU Joint Air Authority, if passengers flying internationally with checked baggage fail to arrive at the departure gate before the flight closes, the person's baggage must be taken back. from aircraft before flight is allowed to take off. For Singapore, passengers with forbidden goods are required to collect it from bags taken at the check-in counter, if the baggage will not be marked with forbidden items and will be discarded before boarding. In the United States, this does not apply to domestic flights as all bags must go through an explosive detection machine (EDS) before loading. Ensuring passengers boarding where they have checked baggage is called "luggage reconciliation" and completed automatically through two commercially available systems. The security assumption of baggage-passenger reconciliation is that terrorists will not commit suicide, and will not board the plane if they cause the bomb to be placed in its grasp. This assumption does not apply to suicide bombers.

The unmanned suitcase caused the fall of four flights, when a bomb in the suitcase exploded:

  • 1983: Gulf Air 771
  • 1985: Air India Flight 182
  • 1988: Pan Am 103
  • 1989: Flight UTA 772

Excess baggage

Excess baggage is the amount of luggage that exceeds the free limit in the size, amount, or weight allowed for travel. At operator's discretion, this can be done at an additional cost, but no guarantees are made and may have to be shipped as shipping instead. Some airlines impose excess baggage embargo on certain routes (usually smaller), indicating that they will receive no (or very little) excess baggage.
