The dog basket (sometimes kennels ) is a metal enclosure, wire, plastic, or cloth with a door where the dog can be stored for safety or transportation. Dog crates are designed to replicate the natural nest of dogs and thus can provide them shelter at home or when traveling to a new environment. Other common reasons for using dog crates are for toilets training new puppies, transporting dogs, restricting access while dogs learn the rules, ensuring dog safety, restricting dogs at locations where dogs can not be safely or legally free to roam, or give dogs a place to go when visitors come home.

There are many types of dog crates, and variations in its kind. Factors to consider when choosing the right casket include cost, durability, portability, safety, and style.
- Solid plastic crates are usually more suitable than other types for safe travel, just like on an airplane. They may also be safer in a car accident than a wire coffin. The drawback is they take up a lot of space and do not fold for storage.
- Crash crates tested like Gunner and Variocage are specially designed for use in vehicles for transportation of pet vehicles. They have a special crumple zone designed to work with the vehicle's crumple zones and absorb impact accidents and have lab-tested for safety. These crates are not intended for use on aircraft or for carrying pets outside the vehicle. They also do not make good household chests.
- The aluminum case can be fixed or folded. Some of their advantages are: light weight, very strong when constructed with appropriate bracing, will not rust, excellent airflow and vision for dogs. The aluminum crate is suitable for use in veterinary hospitals, car travel, as a permanent "nest" for your dog inside the home and in the kennel nursery environment. Some aluminum crates have sturdy walls and some have bars. Crate with bar may be more suitable for dogs who need to look out for comfort. Other dogs may prefer a space like the feel of a solid wall to feel safe.
- Wire cases can usually be folded for storage or transport, although it may be difficult to do and they are quite heavy for its size. They provide more airflow for dogs and give people a clearer view inside and they have varying sizes. Such crates are often used in automobile travel, in veterinary hospitals, and in cages. There are various covers and pads available to make the crates safer and more comfortable.
- The wire box is also popular in dog shows; they allow the dog to be seen clearly by the audience, and the belt, roses, and won ribbons can be hung on a crate for display.
- Soft crates (cloth on metal frames) can be folded easily for storage or carrying and lightness. They provide dogs with a stronger sense of security but still allow visibility and airflow. They can not be used with dogs that tend to dig or chew crate, and they are not suitable for transporting dogs in a vehicle.
- Dog tents are an alternative to soft crates. They offer many of the same advantages (and disadvantages) of soft crates but fold down to smaller size and are so light that they can be put into a tent bag and taken almost anywhere. They are good cages for dog owners who need to pack their soft crates into narrow vehicles or suitcases or for people who climb, camp, or engage in dog sports. Like soft chests, they are not suitable for dogs that are not houseboken, or for vehicle travel.
- Decorative crates made of finished wood, rattan, or other special materials designed to fit home decor, are usually not good for transportation and are not good for destructive dogs, but meet the need for confinement at home.
