The flight bag can refer to any luggage taken on the plane, but usually refers to certain types of document bags carried by pilots and flight crews. Often decorated with airline logos, at one time flight bags are chic fashion accessories.
The items commonly found in pilot flight bags include: operating instructions for flown aircraft, operation manuals for flight crews, aerial charts and navigation (usually Jeppesen or "Jepps" maps, Route Manuals, flight checklists, notebooks and information weather), pilot documentation and licenses (such as their passports, pilot licenses, Aviation English licenses, class-specific medical certificates), and equipment or accessories (such as calculators, pens, sunglasses, radio headphones or binoculars).
Recent advances in technology and miniaturization have seen the development and deployment of electronic flight bags (EFBs), which contain manuals and electronic documents, as well as automated calculation tools and navigation. According to United Airlines, a conventional paper-based flight bag contains an average of 12,000 sheets of paper per pilot. The airline estimates that deployment of the EFB system running on Apple iPads will save nearly 16 million sheets of paper per year, and save 326,000 gallons of jet fuel due to reduced weight on the aircraft.
