The law of weapons in Iowa governs the sale, possession, and use of firearms and ammunition in the state of Iowa in the United States.
On January 1, 2011, Iowa became a "must issue" state of permission to bring a weapon to someone. Applicants must successfully complete an approved training course.
Iowa will respect the legal permits issued by other countries. One should not be a resident of the country from which the permit was issued. However, Iowa residents must have Iowa Permission To Carry to legally carry firearms to his person in Iowa.
A Permit To Acquire (PTA), obtained from the sheriff from the applicant's residence area, is required when buying or buying a gun, either from a dealer or from a private party. The Acquisition License will be granted to qualified applicants aged 21 and older. PTA becomes valid three days after the date of application, and is valid for five years. A PTA is not required when purchasing an antique gun, defined as made on or before 1898 and includes a post-1898 replica of a needle lock, flintlock, or percussion gun.
Iowa residents with permission to carry (PTC) may use PTC as a substitute for PTA when obtaining a gun. PTC is valid for 5 years.
Iowa has ratified state laws on firearms, so local government units may not restrict ownership, possession, or transfer of firearms, or request their registration.
Under Iowa law, private citizens may not have automatic firearms, firearms "other than rifles or rifles, cannons, guns, revolvers or rifles" with holes over 6/10 inches (unless it is antiques made on or before 1898), or explosive, burner, or toxic gas-destroying devices. Sound suppressors ("silencers"), short barrel rifles (barrels under 16 inches), and short barrel rifles (barrels under 18 inches) can be owned if federally registered.
