A Creel is a rattan basket normally used for carrying fish or peat blocks. It is also an enclosure used to catch lobsters and other crustaceans.

In modern times this means different types of wicker baskets used by anglers or commercial fishermen to hold fish or other prey. The word is also found on farms and for some domestic baskets.

In the North Sea herring industry of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, twin is the basket used to measure the catch volume. The standard size is a creel made in an officially approved volume of half and a quarter of a cran. A crane (Gaelic krÃÆ'Â|n) is a unit of capacity used to measure fresh herrings, equivalent to 37.5 gallons of imperial.

A fisherman creel is designed to function as evaporative coolant when coated with moss and dipped into the river to keep the catch cool. The caught fish is inserted through the slot at the top that is held in place by a small leather strap.

Creel is also a high side that is added to the trailer coupled. This makes the trailer more suitable for carrying loose materials, such as grass etc.

The word creel is also used in Scotland (mainly in the north) to refer to devices used to catch lobsters and other crustaceans. Made of webbing (similar to that used in traditional fishing nets) on top of plastic pipe frames and bent wood bases, this leather type is analogous to lobster pots. Some creel placed on one line can be called a "leader".
