Histori

The organization started in 1922 as the Louisiana Highway Commission with 16 Supervisors of the Highway covering some 2,700 miles (4,300 km) of highways. This inspector patrols exclusively on a motorcycle. This motorcycle is privately owned by an individual patrolman, and is managed by an allowance from the state. Of the 16 people in the police force, one person is a captain. This captain served as a troop overseer. The highway commission is divided into ten districts. The Baton Rouge district has two patrollers, while the New Orleans District has three patrollers. The other eight districts each have one patrol officer. Two other officers patrolled across the state's main state highway. In 1928, the agency was known as the Law Enforcement Division of the Highway Commission, and employed 70 uniformed officers. The Criminal Investigation Bureau was also formed around that time. In 1932, the name of the organization was changed to State Highway Patrol, and was authorized to carry firearms. It was used by Governor Huey Long as his personal bodyguard, who escorted him across the state. In 1936, two divisions of law enforcement were combined, by the Louisiana Legislative Act, to form the Louisiana State Police Department. The force of the patrol squad amounted to over 40 at the time, and the main patrol vehicle was a motorcycle. In 1939, the State Police were divided into eight "troops". In-car and motorcycle troops patrol nearly 2 million miles per year across the state. The patrol motorcycle fleet eventually grew to 64 motorcycles. In 1942 the Louisiana Legislature abolished the State Police Department and made it a division of the newly created Department of Public Security. The state police accepted new responsibilities in 1946, when the State Driver Driver Law was enacted requiring every driver to hold a license to operate a motor vehicle. Prior to this time, only commercial vehicle operators, trucks, and buses had to be licensed in Louisiana. In 1948, the number of motorcycles operated by the agency fell to 36 motorcycles. The department relies heavily on cars for patrol purposes, and finally patrol motorcycles are found only in New Orleans and other major cities. The motorcycle patrol unit was used throughout the 1950s, with Governor Earl Kemp Long also using them as bodyguards. In the 1960s, the department used motorcycles, cars, airplanes and helicopters for law enforcement purposes. The department exclusively used Harley-Davidson motorcycles until the 1980s when it switched to Kawasaki motorcycles. Not long after this transition, the motorcycle patrol program was disbanded. In 1997, a patrol motorcycle was brought back to the battlefield. The Agency continues to make progress with the current number of troops employed by departments listed as 1,022.

Patrol car

The main Louisiana State Police patrol vehicle today is Chevrolet Tahoe. The agency started conversion to Tahoe in 2012. Previously, the agency used the Ford Crown Victoria "Police Interceptor." This vehicle is the main patrol vehicle used by agencies from 1997 to 2011, when it replaced Chevrolet Caprice in 1996, and when Crown Victoria was discontinued in 2011. Signs of vehicles including "State Trooper" written on each panel next quarter, the state badge in the center of every front door, the words "Louisiana State Police" written above and below the door badge, and the words "State Police" written in the trunk. Note that the signs in Tahoe include little variation for the designs used before. In 2012 coloring on the door badge has been redesigned. It changes from light blue to dark blue, with the seal of the country done differently as well. This is completely different from the one previously used since 1964 except in dimensions. The red "LSP" also now has a small dark blue border around each letter. The "ACE" badge, which consists of the state of Louisiana blue with red lights, is given to troops that recover five or more stolen vehicles within a year. Since around 2001, most of the patrol vehicles used by this agency have been equipped with an onboard video camera. Other marked patrol vehicles currently in use include Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Caprice, Ford Taurus, and Dodge Durango. Some other unmarked vehicles in different brands and models are also used for various non-patrol purposes. Police vehicles that are currently being tested and considered for use include Dodge Charger. In August 2010, almost all Chevrolet Impala vehicles marked in the inventory were taken from the service, with only a few still operating.
