Plot

During his time at Maudlin Street Secondary Modern School, William Wakefield (Ted Ray) - who has been in school for 20 years - acts as headmaster. He found an ad for a principal from a new school near where he was born and decided to post.

Since the visit coincided with the Inspector of the Ministry of Education (Miss Wheeler, played by Rosalind Knight) and the infamous child psychiatrist Alistair Grigg (Leslie Phillips), he decided to ask his staff for help to ensure that school routines went smoothly during their visit.

While in conferences with his teaching staff (including Gregory Adams (Kenneth Connor), master of science, Edwin Milton (Kenneth Williams), English masters Michael Bean (Charles Hawtrey), music teacher Sarah Allcock (Joan Sims) Short (Hattie Jacques), teacher of mathematics); a senior student (Robin Stevens, played by Richard O'Sullivan) overhears that Wakefield is planning to leave at the end of the term. The students loved the noble teacher and Stevens immediately spread this information to his school friends. They plan to sabotage any effort that might result in Wakefield's praise, which will put him on the road to his new post.

On arrival, Grigg and Miss Wheeler are escorted by Wakefield on an inspection tour and the students go out of their way to do evil in every class they visit. However, Griggs's tour was worth it: he has shone for Sarah Allcock, the lady of the gym, and it is clear that the feeling is mutually beneficial.

Miss Wheeler was disgusted with the children's behavior towards the teacher, but softened when she visited the master science class, where she felt an instinctive mother's affection for the charm of a neuroscientist, Adams.

Wakefield was aware of his position as the new principal in danger and, seeing the interest of Miss Wheeler at Adams, he asked for his help. He asked Adams to make progress to Miss Wheeler to win it. Adams was astonished at the thought, but finally agreed to do his best. After many unsuccessful attempts to tell Miss Wheeler about her love, Adams discovered the untruth had become the truth and finally found enough courage to declare his love.

The disciples, meanwhile, have done everything in their power to make things go wrong, and on the last day of the term caught trying to sabotage the introduction. They were told to report to the Wakefield study and after much cross examination he learned the reason for the week's show - the pupil just did not want to see him leave. Wakefield - very touched - told the children that he would not leave and would see them all next semester.

Miss Wheeler, softened by her new love, announced that she intended to tell the Ministry that staff-student relationships at school were excellent.

Production Note

During filming, Charles Hawtrey's mother often visited the set. While enjoying a cigarette, he accidentally dropped his cigarette ash from a cigarette into his handbag. Joan Sims, who first saw the incident, shouted, "Charlie, Charlie, your mother's bag is on fire!". Charles Hawtrey poured a cup of tea into his bag, closed it, and kept chatting as if nothing had happened.
