The Heart in Hand or Heart-in-Hand is a heart symbol on the open palm, and is a symbol of charity, given from the heart. It is a recognizable symbol in the Northeastern United States and is used by Shakers as a reminder of the words of Mrs. Ann Lee, founder of the Shaker sect, who promotes the simple life of hard work and spirituality, "Put your hands to work, and your heart to God. "This picture is typical of Shaker's attitude, and also implies a loving welcome.
A heart in hand has also become a symbol of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a brotherhood organization that originated from the British Oddfellows order from the mid-18th century. It usually features three connected rings representing friendship, love, and truth.
This symbol begins as the seal of the Protestant Reformator John Calvin, and thus appears in Calvin College's official seal with Calvin's slogan, "My heart, I offer to you, Lord, promptly and sincerely."
This symbol is also often associated with the Amish community.
The symbol was also used as a chop mark in woodblock prints from Gustave Baumann (Germ./Amer. 1881-1971).
