History

Kimber was founded as "Kimber of Oregon" in 1979 by Jack Warne and his son Greg Warned in the small town of Clackamas, Oregon. An Australian, Jack Warne moved to Oregon in 1968 after Portland-based Omark Industries purchased an Australian firearms manufacturer, Sporting Arms (or Sportco), he had set up in Adelaide, South Australia, after World War II.

After its establishment, Kimber of Oregon, which quickly built a reputation for an accurate caliber rifle 22 rifles, began to expand its product line and eventually acquired a second manufacturing plant in adjacent Colton. Jack Warne acquired a fast-release Brownell rifle installation system for Kimber.

In the late 1980s, the company began to struggle after a private stock offering failed to cover the cost of developing the M89 BG (Big Game) rifle. In 1989, Kimber of Oregon was sold to Oregon wood baron Bruce Engel, who founded WTD Industries, Inc. Engel had trouble running Kimber and soon the company sought bankruptcy protection. However, Kimber of Oregon assets are destroyed.

In 1990, several Kimber employees, including Dan Cooper, went to set up Cooper Firearms of Montana. Jack Warne went to establish the Warne Making Company in February 1991, which started the installation of a new gun binoculars system.

In the mid-1990s, Greg Warne tried to revive Kimber, but many of Kimber of Oregon's original tools ended up in junkyard north of Portland. Warne soon found a financial supporter in Les Edelman, who owns a National Sports Distributor. Both bought original tools and partnered to find Kimber of America. The company grew rapidly, but Edelman forced Greg Warne out after acquiring a majority stake in the company.

While Edelman partnered with Greg Warne, he also invested in Yonkers-based Jerico Precision Manufacturing, which manufactures hand tools and mechanical components for the defense industry, which adjust to the cuts in defense spending. Edelman decided to link the existing infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities of Jerico Precision and Kimber's reputation and extensive dealer network to build the M1911-style armor line. He eventually moved Kimber production lines to Jerico's facility in New York, ending Kimber's presence in Oregon. The company now has locations in New York and New Jersey.

On December 9, 2004, the federal jury indicted former CFO Denis Shusterman for embezzling $ 10 million from Kimber Manufacturing and Nationwide Sports Distributors. He was later convicted after pleading guilty, ordered to pay compensation and return taxes, and was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison.

After leaving Kimber, Greg Warne operates Armas Deportivas S.A. in Granadilla, San Pedro, Costa Rica where he makes a special rifle of locally sourced hardwood rifles. Greg Warne died in 2006.

Kimber plans to expand production capacity from a 31,500 square foot (2,930 m 2 ) manufacturing facility in Ridgefield, NJ (Aero Molding). The proposal to add more space to the Yonkers site has been approved as a "regionally significant project" but Kimber seems to have withdrawn its application following concerns raised by worried neighbors.

Pistols

Kimber is famous for its highly accurate M1911 pistol, and offers a variety of customization options. From the beginning, the company introduced the use of metal injection molds for several parts, such as thumb safety, which made it more cost effective to produce.
