The medical identification tag is a small emblem or tag worn on a bracelet, neck chain, or on clothing containing a message that the wearer has important medical conditions that may require immediate attention. These tags are often made of stainless steel or sterling silver. The aim is to remind paramedics, doctors, emergency rooms or other first responders (emergency medical services, first responders, emergency medical responders) of the condition even if the wearer is not conscious enough, old enough, or too hurt to explain. Wallet cards with the same information can be used in lieu of or along with tags, and stick-on medical ID tags can be added or used alone.

In addition to mentioning relevant medical conditions, the label may have a telephone number that can be contacted by medical personnel to obtain further information, such as a doctor, nurse or close family. If applicable and provided, the user's national health service user number may enable access to a more detailed case history. Basically, medical information labels, carved with personal medical problems or the history of the wearer, speak for the wearer when the wearer can not. Coincidentally and where the symptoms can be misleading, such a sign can also be useful as evidence of such conditions for law enforcement personnel.
Type
There are various types of medical ID available. The most common form of medical ID is jewelry that provides a logo or inscription that indicates certain medical conditions. This medical identification label can be made of stainless steel (usually classified as 316L and known as stainless steel surgery), sterling silver or gold. If discovered by an emergency officer, the inscription gives an indication of your particular medical needs. Such medical ID jewelry includes a member identification number and a toll-free number for emergency medical personnel to contact the organization and obtain complete information about the medical, medication, and user history. These organizations maintain a database of medical information on their members and can provide it to medical personnel when requested.
The latest technology allows users to carry stickers with NFC Tags. Similar technology allows users to carry stickers with QR codes. By scanning your NFC Tag or QR code with your smartphone, you'll reach the stored medical warning information. Apple IOS 8 operating system includes facilities for mobile phones that contain the owner's medical emergency information.
Silicone bracelets, pre-printed with general medical conditions or allergies, are also popular. Lack of personalization may be a barrier. Recently patients started "tattooing" their medical conditions on their wrists or arms. Although permanent tattoos may be considered, temporary tattoos also work. Other items include sticking to labels attached to driver's licenses, wallets, or mobile phones that are practical for people who do not want to bring anything more advertise their medical condition.
Another type of medical jewelry is a pendant or wrist strap that contains a wireless warning button, also known as panic button, used at home as part of a wireless medical alert system. This type of medical jewelry sends a signal to a call console that contacts a medical alarm monitoring service or calls the first respondent directly when an emergency occurs.
Machine-readable devices
Devices marked "ICE" that can store large amounts of data and can be read by computers on sale, usually USB flash drives with password protected data entry provide read-only access to emergency medical data. However, it has been shown by staff nurses with experience in trauma and critical care that such devices are worse than useless, at least in most situations in the UK, because medical computer systems are designed not to accept USB storage devices because of the risk of computer viruses. In addition, there is no guarantee that ICE information is even related to an unconscious person carrying it; using false information may cause patient harm and legal liability.
