Pepper 4x4 , formerly called Pepper Niva (Russian: ???? ???? ; Niva ( ???? ) is the Russian word for "field"), is an off-road vehicle designed and manufactured by Russian (former Soviet) producers of AvtoVAZ specifically for the rural market.
This is the first mass-produced off-road vehicle featuring a unibody architecture, independent front suspension with coil springs, and is a precursor to today's crossover SUVs that almost all follow this format; it inspires Suzuki Vitara. Like Vitara, 4x4 Pepper uses a recycle ball ball truck box for off-road reliability. Pickup and emergency van versions are manufactured by VAZInterService.

Name
The previous 4x4 Pepper is called Lada Niva. The name change occurred after the Niva brand was transferred to General Motors, although AvtoVAZ retained the rights to the equivalent Cyrillic name, '????'. It's also marketed as the Lada Sport in Iceland, Pepper Taiga in Austria, Bognor Diva in Uruguay, Pepper Cossack b > in the UK. Since 2014 has been sold as LADA 4x4 in Russia, a name that also began to replace "Niva" in the export market.
It is also the first VAZ model which, in addition to the classic export name brand and engine displacement, also displays the model's own export name (Niva), since the previous model (Zhiguli) only displays the export names mentioned above. brand (Lada) along with their engine displacement. Also, Niva is the only VAZ model that uses the same one and model name for domestic and export markets ( VAZ-2121 Niva for domestic and Lada Niva 1600 for export) , because other models have different export names from that one for the domestic market. (For example, VAZ-2109 Sputnik is Lada Samara 1500 for export market, or VAZ-2105 Zhiguli, which is marked as Lada Riva 1300)

History
Initially, Niva had a 1.6 liter carburetor engine overhead four-cylinder cam that produced 56 kW (76 hp) and 126 N 'm (93 lbÃ, à · ft) at 5,000 rpm, four-speed manual transmission (starting with the new model from 1994, speed 5) and four wheel drive full time. The drive system uses three differentials (center, front and rear). The transfer box includes a high/low range selector lever and central differential lock switch. The low range can be selected with the central differential locked or unlocked. The original Niva has a maximum speed of 81 mph (130 km/h), and can travel at 56 mph (90 km/h) while consuming gasoline at 8.25 L/100 km (34.2 mpg -imp 28.5 mpg -US ). The crane capacity is raised to 860 kg (1900 lb).
Coil springs are located in each of the four wheels, and the independent suspension is at the front, while the rear axle is a 5 link life type, with a ratio between 3.90 and 4.30 depending on the model and market. Good ground clearance at 235 mm (9.25 inches) and 510 mm (20 inches) water depth are negotiable.
Brake (front disk, rear drum) is a dual-style servo-assisted circuit and hydraulic clutch. The back circle is relatively low 36.25 '. The cargo space is 0.48Ã,ÃmÃ,ó (17Ã,à ftÃ,ó), or 1.33Ã,mÃ,ó (47Ã, ftÃ,ó) with the rear seat folded down and, like the classic Zhiguli, the front seat can be set to made two places (by removing the headrests, shifting the chair to the leading position and setting the backrest on the plane with the rear seat - this feature then disappeared when new models with different seats were introduced in 1994). Spare tire is located in the engine room under the hood. The latter feature is considered a useful and practical feature by off-road fans.
The additional equipment for the basic model is somewhat simpler and the same as the Lada car and generally other Eastern block cars in that period, it includes wiper headlights, rear fog lights, right external mirrors (right mirror for domestic models only because the export has both by default However , in the late 1980s even domestic models of all Lada cars also received both mirrors by default), then rear seat belts, tailgate backs, rear window heaters and a set of radios. In the new model (Niva 1.7/VAZ-21213) starting from 1994, all features except wiper and rear fog lamps (discontinued) are standard and optional are air conditioning, anti-lock braking system and hydraulic servomotor for steering column, now part of the standard equipment on the latest models.
The existing model was slightly improved during the first half of the 1980s, when VAZ for the first time stopped one of its models, VAZ-2103 (which has been slowly replaced by VAZ-2106 since 1975). Some chrome lined elements have disappeared in all future models due to the high price and complexity of production, such as, in the case of Niva, the chrome-plated edges and the edges of the removable rocker panels, as well as the external/black mirrors. metallic. Chrome even disappeared from ashtrays and door panels. Also, the front pepper badge is changed to white (then black, on the new model) on all models, not red like that. The rear tailgate label Niva 1600 , (originally located at the center of the rear door), is moved to its right angle due to a rear glass eraser which, at the request of the buyer, is installed to its former place as auxiliary equipment. The rear retroreflectors (or the signal turns on some models depending on the market) are replaced by the Pepper (left) and Niva (right) label and the muddy back flap receives their logo plant. The interior has only slightly changed, along with some minor changes to the instrument panel, choke buttons and other details, perhaps the most prominent difference is the steering of its VAZ-2106, now emblazoned with Russian classical ornaments featuring the Lada logo on the middle (leather ).
Pre-1985 models are visually recognizable by the details mentioned and are currently very rare (in preserved conditions virtually non-existent) and therefore highly valued by collectors.
The first generation ( VAZ-2121 Niva , or commercially known Liva Niva 1600) had been in production until 1993 (existing in parallel in production with a new model until the end of the same year) when the new powerful four-cylinder petrol engine (1.7 liters, 80 horsepower) (designed specifically for Niva and thus, not used by other VAZ models until then) was introduced, replacing the previously used (1.6 liters, 75 power horse) VAZ-2106 engine and make a new model appearance (VAZ-21213/21214 or Lada Niva 1.7/1.7i), such as a carburetor replaced by a one-point fuel injection provided initially by General Motors on 21214/1.7 i model and carburetor The usual Weber is replaced by an improved Solex on the 21213/1.7 model. Transmission changed from 4 to 5 speed, mechanical ignition replaced with electronics and suspension received some relatively small changes. In addition, the exterior exterior of the body is redesigned with an extended tailgate and plate as part of it (so it can have a lower opening, now bordering the rear bumper), as it also receives new, vertical taillights derived from VAZ-2104, replacing the former VAZ-2106 horizontal and VAZ-2102 chrome lined tailgate knob, which was replaced by a simple plastic handle. In the latest models, customizable old-sided glasses, metallic black (previously coated with chrome), dating from the 1970s VAZ-2103 were eventually replaced with larger ones than plastic featuring automatic adjustments. The earlier Pepper pepper was also replaced with the present and larger than the ellipsoid design. However, the door handle accented 190-year-old chromatic appendix still exists, although they are not chrome again on the latest model, but plastic. Although the remainder of the exterior remains largely unchanged to this day (except for LADA 4x4 URBAN and BRONTO ), the interior, however, is almost completely redesigned and only some can be exchanged with the previous one; the ancient VAZ-2106 steering wheel with chrome elements replaced with a more modern and thicker one, first from the VAZ-2107 and later, and the VAZ-2103/2106 instrument, which was replaced with dashboards from VAZ-21099. The artificial black leather seating, which also comes from the VAZ-2106 is replaced by a more modern and taller VAZ-2108 with a polyester front surface (with which the dock features disappear), while the rear seat is upgraded to make it easier to fold. The old Fiat 124 that turns the window from the side door disappears and is replaced with AC for that role, which is on request, (along with ABS and servomotor for the steering column) mounted as additional equipment, while the wiper headlights and rear fog lights disappear. It also receives an entirely new front panel and door, various plastics and even a new mat. The interior door knobs are relocated on the back of the hand instead of below as in previous generations and the door opening of the side door windows is replaced automatically on the latest models (and on LADA 4x4 URBAN ), starting from 2014. Bosch's multi-point fuel injection is used today since 2004, replacing the previously mentioned single point injection of General Motors, used up to that point.
In 1993, the extended Niva model also emerged, known as VAZ-2129 and produced very short (only about one year) because it is very rare and also never exported. Although it has a longer wheelbase, it retains 3 doors like the basic hatchback model (it only displays an additional middle square window added on the sides), however, in the design it's actually a new and old generation hybrid, due to the old features of VAZ-2121 (Niva 1600) body and interior combined with the new 1.680cc VAZ-21213 (Niva 1.7) engine and 5-speed transmission (although later, the 1994 production model featured even new body and interior).
In 1995, the extended estate model with a longer wheelbase and 5 doors appeared, originally known as the VAZ-2131 Niva , commercially did not have the name difference from the standard model (3 doors), which is why it is often referred to simply as Door 5 Niva . Because of the longer wheelbase and thus, the increase in weight, can be used even stronger; 1.774cc inline four petrol engines, producing 63kW/85Ã, hp. While still in production like the basic model, it sees relatively limited usage and is also slightly exported, especially as the longer wheelbase and weight increase offer slightly offered offroad capabilities as well as slightly higher prices when compared to standard models. By 2015, the 5-door model also appears for LADA 4x4 URBAN .
In 1999, the Niva diesel engine model emerged for the first time, known as VAZ-21215 Niva or commercially as Lada Niva 1.9 , which was produced until 2007 and sold only. in some markets. It's powered by 1,905cc Peugeot XUD 9SD inline four diesel engines, delivers 55kW/75 hp and is thus a bit more powerful than the standard 1.680cc VAZ-21213/21214 gasoline engine (it's roughly the same power for the 1.568cc VAZ-2106 engine that used by previous generations). However, the VAZ-21215 is a relatively short-lived model and is no longer available due to the fact that, although fuel consumption is lower, it is not very popular in the domestic market (mainly due to harsh winter conditions, less power, more reliability low, higher prices and maintenance costs compared to gasoline engine models) as well as the fact that Peugeot stopped production of XUD machines mentioned in 2001 (available inventory was available until 2007 when the last VAZ-21215 out of production line) and VAZ never made contracts again for diesel engine production for Niva.
In 2006, the model with the new generation carburetor engine (VAZ-21213/Lada Niva 1.7) was discontinued and, in the same year, the name Niva officially dropped in favor of the new official name LADA 4x4 (although the old name is still used in export markets at least until 2009 and is still used informally worldwide). This is done due to the fact that the company General Motor America (which first supplied the injection system to VAZ) got the right on behalf of Niva , which had to be stopped in further production, along with the old Soviet. VAZ-2121 classification for the domestic market, freely abandoned by the factory itself in the late 1990s.
In 2014, a new model called " LADA 4x4 URBAN appeared, with a generally more modern look resembling an ordinary SUV: new mask, plastic bumper, new rearview mirror, different rim (aluminum) VLI-5 was replaced with classic road tires), central brake lights, heated front seats, air pockets and a bit of restyled interior. However, that does not replace the current 4x4 LADA (formerly known as Lada Niva 1.7i, or VAZ-21214 for the domestic market) that still remain parallel in production with it.
By 2017, other models emerge; LADA 4x4 BRONTO , intended first for offroad use. It features characteristic masks and plastic bumpers with integrated front and rear fog lamps as well as larger plastic roof rails and wheels with new black aluminum rims featuring new; 235/75-R16 Bontyre Stalker domestically produced offroad tires, higher ground clearance (upgraded to a further 35mm) and plastic rust-protected body edges (fenders and rocker panels). Internally, similar to LADA 4x4 URBAN also features a front seat and a heated airbag. Additional equipment includes a front winch, roof headlights and additional fog lights on the front bumper. With all the equipment mentioned, the LadA 4x4 BRONTO is currently the most expensive 4x4 LADA model with the current price of 720,000 RU in the domestic market (around EUR 10,130). A slightly different pickup model designed by VIS is also revealed (featuring integrated metallic grille, different bumpers and snorkels), called LADA BRONTO AMC, but, according to LADA's official website, it has not been produced in serial. due to the fact that it is not offered anywhere sold.
On April 5th of the same year; on the 40th anniversary of the car since the start of production, a special edition of the classic limited edition LADA 4x4 is presented, called the birthday of LADA 4x4 40 , made exactly 1977 copies (Year when Pepper Niva appeared). It features a new aluminum rim, (similar to LADA 4x4 URBAN ) as well as 5 new color colors, 40 anniversary metal labels on the fenders, tailgate and internals on the glove compartment cover, front seat backs and on mats. In addition, it has a slightly restyled interior featuring original leather upholstery seats and steering wheel coverings as well as stainless steel frame. The model is available from June 2017 in domestic and export markets.
A soft top version reappeared in 1983, but was not produced in series or designed by the original VAZ, but was in fact only a modification of the original Niva 1600 (2121) formed by the French coachbuilder, Wassermann for the local market. This is known as Niva Plein Soleil (Sunshine) and is only one of the many Niva modifications made by local importers to their markets. ( Pepper Cossack , Hussar and Pepper Taiga , for example, are modifications to the UK and West Germany markets).
Cossack
During the 1980s, local Pepper importers in various markets made their own upgrades to help compete with more modern SUVs. In the UK the Cossacks model features large body decals, roof rails, running boards, 15 "wheels, and on some versions of sunroof, steel bumper, floodlight, rear tire and semi-rear bucket seats Other imported markets do a similar increase and many are also called Cossacks .
In 1995, Lada UK introduced a face-lift version of Niva Cossack and renamed the base model as Hussar . While Hussar has the original 1977 trim, the new England Cossack features a new Rover-designed grille and other body kit items, and acquires a soft nudge-bar on the front to honor public opinion against bullbars. Both models receive a new 1.7-liter engine and a new higher tailgate that extends the rear opening to the bumper level - a major improvement over the original lips of the original model. Niva's official imports to the United Kingdom ceased in 1997 as importers had difficulty in procuring GM fuel injection units required to meet the ever-tightening British emissions regulations.
There have been several attempts to reintroduce Ladas to the UK. As of May 2010, Niva's base became available again, through independent importers. Aimed at agricultural markets, three models are available (all LHD), 4-seat 4-seat hatchbacks for à £ 10,000, 2-seat commercial vans, Ã, à £ 8000 and 4-seat 2-seat pickup for Ã, à £ 12,000. All meet the current UK Vehicle Certification Agency standards. The only available engine is 1.7 liters of gasoline, but this can be provided with or without LPG conversion.
VAZ-2122 Reka
Although the VAZ was intended exclusively for the production of passenger cars and as such, Niva intended to be a strict civil vehicle, the Soviet military was completely stunned by its attractive offroad capabilities and ordered its military version to be made from the VAZ, which could replace the currently used UAZ-469 as a standard 4x4 military vehicle. In 1976, when the development of VAZ-2121 was nearing completion, engineers from Tolyatti began working on off-road amphibians, which came to be known as VAZ-2122 Reka ('Rivers'), using very different and, natural, louder body than ordinary military vehicles (with the classic features of the spare wheel located at the back of the body rather than in the engine compartment as in the classical Niva) in combination with the usual Niva chassis and wheels, along with the four-wheel permanent drive system (transfer case and a lockable central differential) and mechanics in general, intended for sale to the Soviet Department of Defense. Despite having a rougher body, the weight is roughly the same as the usual Niva, but, instead of the 1,600 cc (55kW/75 hp) VAZ-2106 Niva engine, it uses an older and less powerful 60 hp (45 kW; 61 PS) The 1,300cc engine comes from the VAZ-2101 instead, with a top speed of 71 mph (114 km/h) on the road or 5 kn (5.8 mph, 9.3 km/h) on the water. Internally, it features a different metal front panel, although it uses the same Niva instrument with the same steering wheel and artificial leather chair.
Six different evolutionary prototypes were built, and much of the development work was done. The car was tested in an experimental military unit, in the Defense Ministry's proof field, and in Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan. VAZ-2122 shows better results than currently used by UAZ-469 (especially the fact that it features amphibious capabilities not owned by UAZ) and receives very positive feedback; the military is satisfied with its ability and reliability, its firmness and endurance. In 1987, VAZ completed all development work, and the car was ready for mass production and military service.
However, in the late 1980s, the Ministry of Defense did not have the necessary financial resources to purchase VAZ-2122 on a large scale as well as the fact that it also has several other high-priority projects to invest, such as the T-80U anti-aircraft mobile system, tanks combat T-80U, BMP-3 infantry combat vehicle, BM-30 Smerch multiple rocket launcher, 2S19 Msta self-propelled artillery and more. As a result, Reka was never put into mass production and remains only in the prototype stage, despite the success of the trials and the fact that more than 10 years has been invested in its development.
LWB Nivas
The long wheelbase version - the five-door VAZ-2131 and the three-door VAZ-2129 - were also manufactured from 1994, but not generally exported.
Changes in name plate
The Lada Niva was renamed to LADA 4x4 and continued to be offered with a low distance gearbox, differential lock, ABS, undercarriage protection and more. The price for the model starts at EUR10,990. Taiga will be available in five body styles; 3-door SUV, 5-door SUV, 2-door Pickup, 4-door Pickup and van. Two petrol engines are available for models, 1.6L and 1.7L, along with two transmissions, 4-speed or 5-speed manual.
Starting in the 2014 model year, the "Niva" name plate was discontinued for the Russian market, and the vehicle is currently branded as "LADA 4x4" for short and long wheelbase. This is done to pave the way for the relaunch of the Chevrolet Niva series, which is scheduled to begin production in March 2015. However, due to the current economic situation in Russian-Western relations, AvtoVAZ analysts have suggested that Chevrolet Niva's production may indeed be delayed further into 2015 , especially given the impending package of automotive sanctions against Russia. AvtoVAZ is currently planning to maintain LADA 4x4/Niva for its domestic market, making it an economy class SUV.
Security by modern standards
In 2002 Lada Niva was awarded a zero star out of a possible four by the modern Russian ARCAP safety assessment program. The reviewer noted a very rough body of cars as the only positive aspect of safety. In tests, the passenger dolls were beaten by a glove compartment hard enough to risk a traumatic brain injury.
The reviewers note that they do not expect high ratings and that the results are reasonable, because "it would be naive to believe that the 30-year-old design complies with modern requirements for passive safety". They added it would require the car to be fully modernized to meet modern safety standards.
Niva Usage
In Russia and Europe, Niva has been used as an ambulance, military vehicle, and by various police forces and utility companies. It also sees service for time as a vehicle for coast guard on the Dutch coast. In the former Czechoslovakia, Niva was used as their standard Militsiya police car. The Croat Army was known as the only soldier who used Nivas (taken from civilians) as their standard 4x4 military vehicle during the 1990s war because of the lack of serious military vehicles such as UAZ-469 or GAZ-69 (which are also in use) , until it was subsequently replaced by the British Land Defenders and Austrian Steyr Daimler Puch, who are still in use today.
Transmanche-Link, a commercial consortium that built the Channel Tunnel between Britain and France, uses a fleet of 45 Nivas to help the big project. Each Niva accumulated over 70,000 kilometers (43,000 mi) off-road during its work, and after construction was completed in 1993, the fleet was sold to a local dealer.
In Brazil, Niva was the best-selling off-road vehicle during the early 1990s. In fact, Niva is so cheap that even with an 85% import tax rate, it's cheaper than a Brazilian competitor like Envemo or Gurgel. It was sold far more than Gurgel CarajÃÆ'ás, which Gurgel discontinued production in January 1991. Niva was the first 4X4 import in the Brazilian market following Brazilian president Fernando Collor's decision to allow foreign imports in 1990. In the Brazil market, the 1991 Niva used in good condition cost around R $ 11,000. Competition and higher import value tax forces Niva to retire from the Brazilian market. Even so, thousands of Nivas remain in use in Brazil.
Nivas have been moved on land, on a mountain, through mud, and even under water.
This is the first wheeled vehicle to spend more than ten years in Antarctica, where the classic VAZ-2121 Niva (Lada Niva 1600) is used by the Russian Antarctic Expedition (formerly Soviet) for the transportation of personnel and goods, communication between Antarctic stations, towing boats and where it covers more than 40,000 km (24,855 miles) in the years 1990-2001 so that it operates at temperatures down to -54Ã, à °. Niva also conquered the North Pole in 1998, when the extended VAZ-2131 Niva (5-door model) was dropped by a parachute on ice and successfully completed its operating route at an average temperature of -30 à ° and thus became the first spent wheeled vehicle time there. Also, it has broken the world record highest point ever achieved by motor vehicles when the other VAZ-2131 climbed the 5,200m high base camp on Mount Everest in 1998 and even higher just a year later; on September 16, 1999, when the same Niva belonged to Saint Petersburg, the extreme expedition team reached a height of 5.725m in Tibet mountain during offroad.
Meeting outside Russia
The Bognor car manufacturer in Uruguay collects the Niva version, called Bognor Diva , released in 2004.
In Greece, Automeccanica automakers collected different versions of Lada Niva in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including a home-developed cabrio version.
