Jones was born Geetali Norah Shankar on March 30, 1979 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York, to American concert producer Sue Jones and Indian musician Ravi Shankar.

After her parents split up in 1986, Norah lived with her mother, growing up in Grapevine, Texas. He attended Cross Timbers Secondary School and Grapevine High School before moving to Booker T. Washington High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. While in high school, he sings in the school choir, participates in the band, and plays alto saxophone. At the age of 16, with the approval of his parents, he officially changed his name to Norah Jones.

Jones always has affinity for Bill Evans and Billie Holiday's music, including "oldies". She once said, "My mom has Billie Holiday set of eight albums, I picked one disc I like and played it over and over".

As a child, Jones started singing in church and also took piano lessons and sounds. He still attends church. He considers himself spiritual and appreciates his church's rituals but does not consider himself very religious.

She attended Interlochen Center for the Arts during the summer. While in high school, he won the Student Music Award Down Beat for Best Jazz Vocalist (twice, 1996 and 1997) and Best Original Composition (1996).

Jones attended the University of North Texas (UNT), where he majored in jazz piano and singing with UNT Jazz Singer. During this time, he has the chance to meet with future collaborator Jesse Harris. He gave a ride to a band playing in a university whose members happened to be friends with Harris. He was on a cross-country journey with friends and members of Little Willies future Richard Julian, and stopped to see the band's performances. After meeting with Jones, Harris began to send the main sheet of the song.

In 1999, Jones left Texas for New York City. Less than a year later, he started the band with Harris, and the recording with them was a bestseller.

Musical career

Jones was a lounge singer before becoming a recording artist. Before releasing his first album, he appeared with Poetic Wax, Peter Malick, and jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter.

2000 2000: The Peter Malick Group Session,/span>

As artist Peter Malick said in a liner note, "I started looking for a singer who could record [my latest songs] for me." On Tuesday night I walked into the Living Room just as the singer announced the last song of the set. The classic Washington "Because I'm Falling for You" fills the room and I'm breathing in. Here, in Billie Holiday tradition, comes a very beautiful voice, blues infused. This is my first contact with Norah Jones. "

Peter would ask Norah to sit on sessions in Room 9 of Space in South Boston, Massachusetts, in August and September 2000. Together, they recorded Malick songs-writing "New York City", "Strange Transmission" , and "Deceive You", along with the covers of "All Love" (Sam Maghett), and "Heart of Mine" (Bob Dylan). These songs will be the album The Peter Malick Group featuring Norah Jones, New York City (2003). The CD, released on Koch Records (KOC-CD-8678), has long been out of print and is relatively rare.

2001-2003: First Session and Come Away with Me

After moving to New York City, Jones signed a contract with Blue Note Records, a label owned by EMI Group. The signing came as an indirect result from Jones appearing as lead singer for JC Hopkins Biggish Band. Shell White, then wife of JC Hopkins, works for EMI Publishing and follows Jones' three-track demo to label president Bruce Lundvall and A & amp; R Brian Bacchus. The demo featured two jazz and track standards by Jesse Harris. Lundvall and Bacchus immediately agree that Jones has great potential. Although initially unsure about which direction his music will follow, especially since Blue Note is a jazz label, they decided to sign Jones. Bacchus told HitQuarters: "We let him find his own direction... We know that if he can develop his songwriting and we can find great songs, it will work."

Jones first teamed up with experienced producer and engineer Jay Newland. Bacchus thinks that Newland's experience in jazz, blues, rock, country and folk will give him a "feeling for his voice." Together they cut about nine demo songs, of which six released Blue Note debuts, First Sessions sampler, while the rest were set aside for his debut album. First Session was released in 2001.

Released in February 2002, Jones' debut album, Come Away with Me , is celebrated for mellow mix, acoustic pop with soul and jazz. Debuting at No. 139, reached No. 1 on US Billboard 200. The single "Do not Know Why" hit No. 1. 1 on Top 40 Adult Recurrents in 2003 and No. 30 on Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.

In 2003, he was nominated for eight and eventually won five Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, Recording of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Appearance for "Do not Know Why" on the 45th Grammy Awards. This matches the record for most Grammy won by female artists in one night (tying up with Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys). That night, Jesse Harris won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year for writing "Do not Know Why", Arif Mardin won the Producer of the Year, especially for his work on Come Away With Me, and this album also received a Grammy Award for Best Engineered, Non-Classic Album.

Jones described the session as "fun, easy and easy" and without a deadline; Blue Note executives reported not to know he was recording an album. The song "My Dear Country" is a political commentary; he wrote it before the election day of the President of the United States in 2004.
