Sun Voyager (Iceland: SÃÆ'³lfar) is a sculpture by JÃÆ'³n Gunnar ÃÆ' rnason, located next to the SÃÆ'Â|braut street in ReykjavÃÆ'k, Iceland. Sun Voyager is described as dreamboat, or an ode for the sun. Artists intend to deliver the promise of undiscovered territory, dreams of hope, progress and freedom.

History

In 1986, the city's western district association funded a competition for a new outdoor sculpture to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city of ReykjavÃÆ'k. Gunnar's Sun Voyager wins the competition, and the aluminum model (42.5 x 88 x 36 cm) is presented to the city for enlargement. The full-sized Sun Voyager was finally unveiled at SÃÆ'Â|braut on the anniversary of Reykjavà ,k town, August 18, 1990.

The work is built of quality stainless steels and stands on a circle of granite slabs surrounded by so-called "concrete town-hall". It was built in accordance with the enlarged Sun-gunnar full image of Sun Voyager and supervised by assistant Jene Gunnar, artist Kristinn E. Hrafnsson. The sculpture engineering is supervised by a technologist, SigurjÃÆ'³n Yngvason, in close collaboration with JÃÆ'³n Gunnar himself, the building itself is done by Reynir HjÃÆ'¡lmtÃÆ'½sson and his assistant.

Drafts

In an interview published in the newspaper ÃÆ'žjÃÆ'³ÃÆ'  ° viljinn on June 11, 1987, JÃÆ'³n Gunnar describes the origin of the work as part of the Scandinavian art project, the Experimental Environment, which undertakes various artistic experiments in Iceland, Denmark and elsewhere in the eighties:

In May 1985, a group of artists, members of the Scandinavian art project, the Experimental Environment, gathered to take part in the Saari-Vala Environmental Arts Action in Bockholm, Finland. There I experienced a sense of history of the origin of Iceland, something also related in this exhibition at Nordic House in ReykjavÃÆ'k.

I had a wonderful feeling that I had been on this island before, while traveling on a journey from Mongolia to Iceland, hundreds of years ago.

As you know, there is speculation that Iceland as a race originated in Mongolia. I have discovered the history of their migration to Iceland, which goes as follows: Centuries ago, a mighty warlord, say Alexander the Great, lived in the known center of the world. He sent his bravest and most experienced warriors, along with some women, scribes and other followers, on exploratory expeditions to the north, west, south and east winds, to discover and conquer new unknown territories. Those who head east follow the sunrise until they reach the Mongolian steppes. There they settled and lived comfortably. The scribes accompanying the soldiers were expected to document the expeditions for the king. A few centuries later, when the documents written by the scribes finally came to be examined, the people found that they had another homeland in the west. They therefore decided to gather their belongings and head back west to the sunset. We followed the sun for days and years, walking, riding, and sailing. We enrich our experience and our resolve grows stronger as our journey progresses, and we record everything we see and experience. I remember the endless pine forests, mountains and waterfalls, lakes, islands, rivers, and the sea before it finally reached the ocean. We then built large ships and sailed west to the sunset.

As a result of the real experience of my participation in this expedition while on the island of Bockholm in the Finnish archipelago, I carved a picture of a sun ship into a granite rock by the sea. The sun ship represents the promise of an undiscovered new territory. It is also showcased here at Nordic House, made of aluminum.

Location

There is some dispute about the location of Sun Voyager at SÃÆ'Â|braut in ReykjavÃÆ'k. Some people complain that the ship is not facing west, towards the sunset according to the concept behind it. His initial intention was to have Sun Voyager stationed in the western part of Reykjavà ,k, for obvious reasons. Jnun Gunnar's initial idea was for a ship to be placed on the hill of Landakot, the bow overlooking the center of ReykjavÃÆ'k and the loud church of Landakot. Another possibility is that it could be placed by a port in the center of ReykjavÃÆ'k on a specially built base. The coastline by ÃÆ' nanaust still ends up being Jönn Gunnar's favorite location for the ship. Unfortunately, a change in urban planning for ReykjavÃÆ'k comes to the exclusion of this location. In the end, the final decision is taken (with the approval of JÃÆ'³n Gunnar) that Sun Voyager should be placed in SÃÆ'Â|braut on a small cape (called jokes by artist JÃÆ'³nsnes: JÃÆ'³n's Peninsular). JÃÆ'³n Gunnar is well aware that when dashed to his platform, Sun Voyager will be facing north, but feels that it makes little difference when it comes to it.

Sun Voyager is built according to a large-scale artist-made plan. Its irregular shape with its constantly flowing lines and poetic movements which are characteristic of so many of its works make it seem as if the ship is floating in the air. It reaches out into space in such a way that the ocean, the sky and the mind of the observer become part of the work as a whole. As a result, Sun Voyager has unique qualities because it brings every observer to wherever/mind brings it. Some of JÃÆ'³n Gunnar's works have simple clear interpretations. As he himself states, all works of art must convey messages that transcend the work itself. It is the observers who bear the ultimate responsibility for interpreting the work in its own way, thus becoming participants in the creation of the work as a whole. The works of JÃÆ'³n Gunnar often make such demands on the observer, giving them the opportunity to discover new truths as a result of their experience.

Interpretation

It is a common misconception that Sun Voyager is a Viking ship. It is understandable that many travelers think like this when traveling in Iceland, the land of saga-saga.

JÃÆ'³n Gunnar himself was seriously ill with leukemia at the time the full-scale Sun Voyager was built, and he died in April 1989, a year before he was stationed at his present location. Therefore, some people suggest that JÃÆ'³n Gunnar make a work during this period, when he may have been preoccupied with death, and argues that Sun Voyager should be seen as a ship that transports the soul into the world of death. Sun Voyager is basically imagined as dreamboat, an ode to the sun representing light and hope.

Related work

Galdur ("Magic") is another outdoor sculpture that JÃÆ'³n Gunnar was asked to design during this period (1988). Planned to be outside the main entrance of the City Hospital in Fossvogur, ReykjavÃÆ'k. JÃÆ'³n Gunnar made a drawing and sculpture model in a workshop he founded in an unfinished hospital while he was a patient there. In an interview published in the MorgunblaÃÆ'Â i iÃÆ'Â ° newspaper on December 4, 1988, JÃÆ'³n Gunnar said:

The pattern is a magical symbol of healing [...]. The trident is an international symbol for the sun, and the sun symbol is present in all magic. [...] The statue will be made of stainless steel that will reflect sunlight like a mirror. It will be bathed in the reflection of the sun, and sends its light to the hospital window.

Galdur is the latest artwork to be envisioned by JÃÆ'³n Gunnar. This work symbolizes hope and healing rather than conclusions or death. Detek gjelder Sun Voyager.
