History
The company was founded in 1884. Since 1891, the company has sent a knife to the Swiss army. Their symbol - the cross on the shield - has been used by Victorinox since 1909. That year, founding mother of Karl Elsener died and she named the company "Victoria" in her honor. In 1921, with the addition of "inox" (the abbreviation for acier inoxydable , the French term for stainless steel) into their product, brand and company name to "Victorinox" ("Victoria" "Inox" ).
In 1972, Forschner Butcher Scale Company of New Britain, Connecticut became Victorinox's exclusive distributor to the United States. In 1981, the company became a public company and Charles Elsener, president of Victorinox, gained a significant percentage of shares. In 1983, his name was changed to Forschner Group, Inc. In the 1980s, Forschner registered the name of the Swiss Army as a trademark in the US. In 1992, Precise Imports Corp., and Wenger's knife importer from Canada, sued and Forschner retained the right to use trademarks on compasses, watches and sunglasses, while Precise could use them in marketing other non-knife goods. In the mid-1990s, Forschner changed its name to Swiss Army Brands, Inc. (SABI).
In 2001, Victorinox teamed up with SABI to create an international watch company Victorinox Swiss Army Watch AG. In August 2002, Victorinox acquired all of SABI's remaining shares to acquire the Swiss Army trademark. Previously, SABI has sold Swiss Army branded watches in North America and - under license - Victorinox branded watches outside North America. But after that, the combined brand of Victorinox Swiss Army has been marketed all over the world.
On April 26, 2005, Victorinox acquired Wenger, the official supplier of another Swiss Army knife, announced that it was intended to keep both brands intact.
In 2006 the company has a workforce of 900 employees and produced about 34,000 Swiss Army knives, 38,000 multi tools, and 30,000 households, kitchens and knives per work day. About 90 percent of its production is exported to over 100 countries. Victorinox claimed never to fire an employee. To avoid this, they set aside profits during the boom period to complete the recession period, as well as temporary employee contracts to other companies as outsourced labor during the recession.
On January 30, 2013, Victorinox announces that the company will combine the Wenger knife product line with the Victorinox brand to strengthen its competitive position internationally.
In 2014, Victorinox acquired the TRG Group from Centric Group. For several years, TRG Group is a Victorinox licensee for the manufacture of luggage and travel-oriented products. Victorinox integrates TRG Group in the company as the Victorinox Travel Gear division.
In 2017 Victorinox decided to close the apparel division with the aim of focusing on other core product lines.
