Henri Bendel , founded in 1895, is a New York City-based American high-end ladies store that sells handbags, jewelry, luxury fashion accessories, house fragrances and presents from Henri Bendel. Its flagship store in New York is located on 712 Fifth Avenue.
Henri Bendel was the first retailer to have his own fragrance, to offer in-store makeovers, and to showcase his own fashion show. Retailers are credited with developing the concept of shop-in-a-shop merchandising shop used in some department stores today.

History and influence
Henri Willis Bendel was born in Louisiana in 1868 and moved to New York to work as a milliner. He opened his first shop, in Greenwich Village, in 1895. In 1907, he began to mark the brown-and-white striped boxes that were still identified with the company. In 1913, Henri Bendel was the first retailer to sell Coco Chanel designs in the US.
After Bendel's death in 1936, his nephew became store president and served until his retirement in 1954. His nephew Bendel, who later founded Belgian Shoes, died in 1997.
Geraldine Stutz was president of Henri Bendel from 1957 to 1986. Stutz had "legendary eyes to discover the latest designers and use them first," including Perry Ellis, Jean Muir, Sonia Rykiel, Carlos Falchi, Mary McFadden and Ralph Lauren. In 1958, Stutz changed the store's main storefront into a U-shaped "Store," "which some considered a pioneer of today's in-store merchandise displays.
During 1960, Andy Warhol was an illustrator at home. Beginning in 1994, Izak Zenou's illustrations have appeared in Henri Bendel's advertising and promotional materials.
In recent years, retailers have been aiming to grow from the "iconic New York brand" to "a nationally recognized accessory company." Beginning in 2008, the brand grew beyond the New York store to become a national chain with 28 stores (other than the NYC boats) across the US. In 2009, Henri Bendel stopped selling clothes. In 2014, New York's flagship stores and websites start selling only Henri Bendel branded handbags, jewelry, fashion accessories, and house fragrances, following models made in other stores.
Paul Blum was appointed Chief Executive Officer Henri Bendel in 2016. Paul joined Henri Bendel from Fred Segal, where, as chief executive officer, his job was to revitalize and expand the brand, re-create store environments and customer experiences. Creative Director Pina Ferlisi joins the company in July 2012. Ferlisi has launched Marc by Marc Jacobs line, being chief of design at Gap, serving as creative director for McQ in London and executive vice president of design for Coach.
Henri Bendel was named the Retailer of the Year in 2010 by The Accessories Council.

Flagship store landmark status
Fifth Avenue's main ship is currently located in two landmark buildings, the Rizzoli building and the Coty building, as well as the new five-story building. During the renovation of the Coty building, 276 glass paneled "work" panels ordered from Rene Lalique in 1912 were restored. Glass fills three large windows consisting of the front, the third and fourth of the ship Henri Bendel. After the opening of the store in 1991, it received a landmark status from the Landmark Preservation Commission of the city.

Ownership
After his nephew Bendel, also named Henri Bendel, retired from the company in 1954, the Bendel family sold his shop to a group of investors. In 1980, Henri Bendel's president, Geraldine Stutz, bought the store with a group of investors from Genesco Inc., a retail/apparel company that has owned Bonwit Teller and other stores.
In 1985, L Brand acquired the Henri Bendel brand. Previous Limited Brands, a company based in Columbus, Ohio is also the parent of Victoria's Secret, PINK, Bath & amp; Body Works, and La Senza and operates 2,917 specialty stores owned by companies in the US, Canada and the UK.
