M.H. Alshaya Co. is a retail business of Alshaya group of companies, founded in Kuwait in 1890. In addition to its retail operations, Alshaya Group has shares in real estate, construction, hotels, automotive and general trading, mostly based in the Middle East. Its hotel division has the Sheraton Hotel in Kuwait and the Oberoi Hotel in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

Alshaya also operates an F & amp; B in the UK under the trading company as Diverse Dinning, this includes Shake Shack and other US Franchise Brands.

History

1890s-1970s

The Alshaya Group has been in retail since the 1890s, initially trading with British India. In 1965, the group opened the Sheraton in Kuwait City, then the only five-star hotel in the Middle East south of Beirut, and the first Sheraton outside of North America.

1980s-1990s

Alshaya entered the international retail franchise in 1983 with the acquisition of a Kuwait franchise for UK Mothercare retailers. Today the company operates stores for Mothercare in 14 markets. In 1999, Alshaya entered the food retail sector in partnership with Starbucks. It now manages and operates several food brands including Asha's, Dean & amp; Deluca, Le Pain Quotidien, Pizza Express, Pinkberry, P. F. Chang, Shake Shack, Potbelly, IHOP, The Cheesecake Factory, Texas Roadhouse and Katsuya by Philippe Starck. Alshaya launched its own brand of shoes and accessories Milano in 1994.

2000s

Alshaya's acquisition of Topshop franchise for Turkey in 2002 was its first expansion outside the Middle East. The company moved to Russia in 2005 with the acquisition of franchise rights for Mothercare.

In 2006, Alshaya launched an international clothing retailer H & amp; M in the Middle East, followed by a number of US-centric brands that want to expand to the Middle East: Dean and Deluca (2008), Express, PF Chang, Pinkberry, and Payless ShoeSource (all 2009).

2010s

In 2010, Alshaya added American Eagle Outfitters, Pottery Barn, and Pottery Barn Kids to his portfolio. It also guarantees franchise rights to Texas Roadhouse's first international outlet, and opens the first Victoria's Secret Beauty and Accessories store in the Middle East in Bahrain and Kuwait.

In June 2012, the first Cheesecake Factory and an IHOP restaurant outside North America opened in the UAE. In November 2012, eight other brands were added to Alshaya's portfolio: Kuwait's Harvey Nichols, Victoria's Secret, Jack Wills, COS, Teavana, Garcett Popcorn Shops, West Elm and Williams Sonoma.

In December 2012, Alshaya opened the Alshaya Retail Academy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, providing retail training and graduation jobs for young Saudi women. In April 2014, Alshaya announced it would open two other Alshaya Retail Academies in Saudi Arabia, in Jeddah and Dammam.

Alshaya moved to Leisure & amp; Entertainment sector in June 2013 with the opening of KidZania Kuwait, at The Avenues (Kuwait). Sprinkles Cupcakes, Veranda and Muji also opened at The Avenues in the same year. Katsuya by Philippe Starck was launched in Kuwait and UAE, and in December 2013, six Alshaya restaurant brands were introduced to Saudi Arabia - Cheesecake Factory, IHOP, Texas Roadhouse, Shake Shack, P. F. Chang, and PizzaExpress.

In 2014, Icing, a popular American jewelry and accessories retailer, made its debut in Kuwait as part of Alshaya's portfolio. This opening represents the brand's first expansion outside the United States.

2015 sees the Middle East fast food chick Raising Cane restaurant in Kuwait.

In 2016, Alshaya launched its loyalty program, Privileges Club, in Kuwait, with plans to launch the program throughout the GCC market. The company also opened its first store by American chocolatier Bridgewater Chocolate in the Middle East. The Lebanese restaurant Babel opened its first outlet outside Lebanon, in Kuwait.

By 2017, several new brands make their Middle East debut, including Bouchon Bakery; Charlotte Tilbury; NYX Cosmetics; 400 Gradi; and & amp; Another Story. The company also opened Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait in Burj Alshaya in downtown Kuwait. Burj Alshaya features a 22-storey Four Seasons in the East Tower and will be the new corporate headquarters on 43-storey West Tower. The West Tower will be completed by 2018 and will complete construction.

2018 saw several brands making their Middle East debut. The Korean beauty brand Etude House was launched in Dubai, while the AVEDA and Tromborg organic skin and beauty care brands opened in Kuwait. Also making their regional debut in the new Avenues Phase IV Kuwait extension are Swedish fashion brands, Monki, Blaze Pizza, and Cleo MediterrÃÆ'¡neo.
