The Preakness Stakes is an American flat horse race race held on the third Saturday of May each year at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. This is a Class I race that runs more than 9.5 millimeters ( 1 3 / 16 Ã, m) on the dirt, Colts and geldings carry  £ 126 (57 kg), fillies  £ 121 (55 kg) This is the second gem of the Triple Crown, held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes.

Running first in 1873, Preakness Stakes was named by former governor of Maryland after a victorious stallion in Pimlico. The race has been called "The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans" because the amalgamated yellow flower blanket resembles a Maryland state flower placed across the withers of the colt or filly. Attendance at Preakness Stakes ranks second in North America among riding events, only surpassed by the Kentucky Derby.

The 143 running Pitchness Pitchness takes place on Saturday, May 19, 2018.

Histori

Two years before the Kentucky Derby run for the first time, Pimlico introduced a new betting contest for three-year-old Preakness during his first spring race that had met in 1873. Former Maryland Governor Oden Bowie named the miles later and one and a half (2 , 41 km) race to honor the Preakness colt of Milton Holbrook Sanford Preakness Stables in Preakness, Wayne Township, New Jersey, which won a Dinner Party bet on Pimlico's day (October 25, 1870). The name New Jersey is said to be derived from the name Native American Pre-qua-les ("Quail Woods") for the area. After Preakness wins the Dinner Party, his jockey, Billy Hayward, opens a silk sack of gold coins hanged from a wire stretched across the tracks of the judges' stands. This is the way it should be that the "wire" at the finish line is introduced and how the "wallet" money comes. In fact, the term "wallet", meaning prize money, has been used for more than a century.

The first Preakness, held on May 27, 1873, drew seven starters. The three-year-old John Chamberlain, Survivor, collects a $ 2,050 winner's wallet with an easy return home of 10 meters. This was the biggest margin of victory until 2004, when Smarty Jones won by 11 1/2 the length.

In 1890 Morris Park Racecourse in the Bronx, New York hosted Preakness Stakes. The race is run under defective conditions, and age restrictions are lifted. The race was won by a five-year-old horse named Montague. After 1890, there was no run for three years. For 15 years from 1894 to 1908, the race was held at the Gravesend Race Track on Coney Island, New York. In 1909, he returned to Pimlico.

Seven Stakes Preakness editions have run under defective conditions, where better or preferred horses are assigned to carry heavier loads. It was first run under these conditions in 1890 and again in 1910-1915. During these years, the race is known as Handicap Preakness.

In March 2009, Magna Entertainment Corp., which owns Pimlico, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, opening the possibility that Stakes could move again. On April 13, 2009, the Maryland Legislature approved a plan to buy Stakes and Pimlico courses if Magna Entertainment could not find a buyer.

Attendance at Preakness Stakes ranks second in North America and usually goes beyond the presence of all other betting races including Belmont Stakes, the Breeders' Cup and Kentucky Oaks. The presence of Stake Preakness is usually just the Kentucky Derby road, for more information see The American Thoroughbred Racing Horse Show.

In February 2017, the Maryland Stadium Authority released the first phase of the study that said Pimlico needed $ 250 million in renovations. Until May 2017, no one is interested to finance the work. Stronach Group, owner of Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park, is only interested in moving Pitchness Stakes to Laurel Park unless someone else is funding Pimlico.

Evolution of the Triple Crown series

The Preakness is the second leg in the Triple Crown series of American race races and almost always attracts Kentucky Derby winners, some other horses that run in Derby, and often some horses that do not start at Derby. Preakness is 1 / 16 mile, or 9 1 / 2 furlong, compared to Kentucky Derby, which 1 1 / 4 miles/10 furlongs. This is followed by the third leg, Belmont Stakes, which is <2>/span> 1 / 2 mile/12 for two years.

Since 1932, the order of the Triple Crown race has the first Kentucky Derby, followed by Preakness Stakes and then Belmont Stakes. Before 1932, Preakness was run before the Derby eleven times. On May 12, 1917, and again on May 13, 1922, Preakness and Derby were run on the same day.

Today, Preakness runs on the third Saturday in May, two weeks after Kentucky Derby, and three weeks before Belmont Stakes. Consequently, the race takes place no earlier than May 15, and not later than May 21st.

Running race

Right after the horses for Preakness were summoned to the post, the audience was invited to sing "Maryland, My Maryland", the official tune of the state of Maryland. Traditionally, the Baltimore Colts Marching Band led the song from infield. Today, the United States Navy Academy Glee Club leads the song.

Once the Preakness winner has been declared officially, a painter climbs the ladder to the top of a replica of the Old Clubhouse cupola. The color of the winning silk owner is applied to the jockey and the horse that is part of the weather vane above the infield structure. This practice began in 1909 when horses and riders propeller weather sat on top of the old Member Clubhouse, built when Pimlico opened in 1870. The Victorian buildings were destroyed by fire in June 1966. The replica of the old building dome was built to stand in the winner's circle Preakness in the middle of the field.

A yellow flower blanket smeared with black lacquer to create a black-eyed Susan look (see Winning) is placed around the neck of the current winner, and a Woodlawn Vase replica is given to the winning horse owner. Had the horse also won the Kentucky Derby, speculation and excitement soon began to rise, whether the horse would continue to win the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing at Belmont Stakes in June.

Win the race

In 1917, Woodlawn Vase was first awarded to the Preakness winner, who was not allowed to keep it. Finally, half of the trophy was awarded to the winners for permanent storage. Original trophies are stored at the Baltimore Museum of Art and taken to the race every year under guard, for the award ceremony of the winner.

In 1940, it was proposed to hang a victory horse in a bouquet of flowers from Maryland State, Rudbeckia hirta, commonly called the black eyes of Susans. This poses a problem, because the race lasts almost two months before the flowers bloom in late June or July. At first, the yellow Viking daisies were painted to resemble black-eyed people. The painted flowers have been discontinued since the first decade of the current millennium and the viking pitch, a member of the chrysanthemum family, is now in use. Although Preakness is sometimes referred to as the "race for black-eyed Susans", no black-eyed Susan has ever been used.

In 1918, 26 horses entered the race, and it was run in two divisions, providing two winners that year. Currently, the race is limited to 14 horses.

In 1948, Preakness was broadcast for the first time by CBS.

The Preakness has been run on seven different distances:

  • 1 1 / 2 mi (2.41 km) Ã,: 1873- 1888, 1890
  • 1 1 / 4 mi (2.01Ã, km) Ã,: 1889
  • 1 1 / 16 mi (1.71 km) Ã,: 1894-1900, 1908
  • 1 mile 70 meters (1.67 km) Ã,: 1901-1907
  • 1 mile (1.61 km) Ã,: 1909, 1910
  • 1 1 / 8 mi (1.81 km) Ã,: 1911-1924
  • 1 / 16 mi (1.91 km) Ã,: 1925-now

Wallet Money

At its inauguration in 1873, Preakness carried a $ 1,000 mark. The first major increase occurred in 1919 when the race had a value of $ 25,000. It rose to $ 100,000 in 1946 and in 1959 was raised to $ 150,000. The next increase occurred from 1979 to 1989, when the wallet went up four times from $ 200,000 to $ 500,000, before going to $ 1 million in 1997. On December 12, 2013, Maryland Jockey Club announced for 2014 running Preakness the wallet would be increased from $ 1,000,000 to $ 1,500,000.

InfieldFest

The race has had something of a party atmosphere in the past, especially in the midfield, which is a general acceptance. The course has a "bring your own liquor" policy until 2009, previously including a keg of beer but in the 2000s it was restricted to all the cans a beer can carry with a cooler. However, despite the number of people over 100,000, the BYOB policy was canceled in 2009 after a video of a drunken man running along a portable toilet line while being thrown at a beer can reach a large audience.

In 2009, with an alcohol ban, race participants dropped to 77,850 after reaching 100,000 for eight consecutive years. In 2010, and Maryland Jockey Club responded with a new show called "InfieldFest" with performances by musical acts, "Mug Club", which included infield tickets and unlimited refillable beers, and a mascot named "Kegasus", playing in tong and pegasus (though centaurs are actually). The Kegasus much-booed retired in 2013. In 2010, ticket sales have rebounded to 95,760 and since then remain high.

Apart from InfieldFest, this race is known for its luxurious hats and official cocktails, black-eyed Susan, made with vodka, St-Germain liquor and pineapple, lime and orange juice.

Note speed:

  • 1 / 16 mile (1.91 km) - 1:53 - Secretariat (1973)

The secretariat, the 1973 winner (and ultimately the winner of Triple Crown) was originally credited with a 1:55 running time. Two Daily Racing Form clockers, however, have set the Preakness Secretariat at 1:53 2 / 5 , which will become a new bet record. The hearing was held over the time difference, where the video playback showed the Secretariat reaching the wire faster than Canonero II, the current record holder, but instead of giving Secretariat a record, the Jockey Club of Maryland decided to split the gap and make the official watch time of Pimlico , which has set the race time at 1:54 2 / 5 . The issue was finally resolved in June 2012, when a Maryland Racing Committee meeting unanimously decided to change the Secretariat's final time to 1:53 based on the testimony and analysis of reruns. As a result, the Secretariat holds the current official record for all three Triple Crown races.
