The battle bag , or Mann bag , is a light load carrier system designed to allow combat infantry to carry enough ammunition and additional equipment such as medical supplies, backup batteries and equipment radios. There are many different suppliers for this, with the British Army having designed its own version for publication under the PECOC program. The key compartments, or pockets, on the combat bag consist of the main compartment, 3 to 4 bags of ammunition, FFD bags (trauma dressing), and radio pockets, which are usually installed inside the main compartment. Some designs of combat bags have a MOLLE strip on it, to allow users to access the bag as per their operational requirements. Others, such as the BlackHawk bag, have an internal map case.
The combat bag was originally designed to be used as a "grab bag", to allow drivers and vehicles borne by the vehicle to take an important supply at a descend for functions such as ambush or attack phase of a mechanical attack. From there, it has spread popularity with troops because of its ability to be used comfortably on top of body armor, as well as the fact that it can be quickly removed from the wearer in a medical emergency, or to allow the wearer to crawl through "mouseholes" (small jagged holes blown through complex wall with explosive charge).
