Plot

The film opened during the British Caesarean invasion, with Mark Antony (Sid James) struggling to lead his troops through a miserable weather. In a nearby village, caveman Horsa (Jim Dale) and Hengist Pod (Kenneth Connor) attempted to warn Boudica about the invasion, but were captured by the Romans.

After being in Rome, Horsa was sold by the slave trade company, Marcus et Spencius, and Hengist was destined to be thrown to the lion when no one agreed to buy it. Horsa and Hengist escaped and took refuge in the Temple of Vesta. While hiding there, Julius Caesar (Kenneth Williams) arrives to consult Vestal Virgins, but attempts are made on his life by his bodyguard, Bilius (David Davenport). At close range, Horsa kills Bilius and runs away, leaving Hengist to take credit for saving Caesar's life and being Caesar's new bodyguard.

When a power struggle arose in Egypt, Mark Antony was sent to force Cleopatra (Amanda Barrie) to abdicate the throne for the sake of Ptolemy. However, Mark Antony became infatuated with him, and instead killed Ptolemy off-screen to win it. Cleopatra convinces Mark Antony to kill Caesar and become Rome's own ruler so they can rule a powerful Roman-Egyptian alliance together. After seducing one another, Mark Antony agrees, and plans to kill Caesar.

Caesar and Hengist traveled to Egypt in a kitchen, along with Agrippa (Francis de Wolff), whose Mark Antony was convinced to kill Caesar. However, Horsa has been arrested again and is now a slave to Caesar's kitchen. After killing lords (Peter Gilmore), Horses and kitchen slaves killed Agrippa and his killer friends and swam to Egypt. Hengist, who had been sent to fight Agrippa and was unaware of Horsa's presence on board, again took credit.

Once at the palace of Cleopatra, an Egyptian forecaster (Jon Pertwee) warned the Emperor of a plan to kill him, but Mark Anthony convinced Caesar to escape. Instead, Caesar convinced Hengist to move with him, as Cleopatra and Caesar never met. At the meeting, Cleopatra lured Hengist, who accidentally exposed Cleopatra and Mark Anthony as potential killers. He and Caesar then allied themselves with Horsa, and after defeating the Cleopatra Sosages (Tom Clegg) bodyguard in battle, Hengist and the party fled from Egypt. Caesar returned to Rome, only to be killed on Ides of March. Horsa and Hengist returned to England, and Mark Antony was left in Egypt to live "one Saturday night long" with Cleopatra.

Background notes

The costumes and sets used in the film were originally intended for Cleopatra (1963) before the production moved to Rome and rebuilt new sets there. Carry On Cleo was filmed between July 13 and August 28, 1964.

The original poster and publicity artwork by Tom Chantrell was withdrawn from circulation after 20th Century Fox succeeded in bringing a case of copyright infringement against Anglo Amalgamated distributor, who discovered the design was based on a painting by Howard Terpning which Fox owns copyright and is accustomed to promoting the movie Cleopatra.
