The Motorola Bag Phone is the everyday name for a portable mobile phone line manufactured by Motorola, inc. from 1990 to 2000.

Description

Motorola introduced the line of Bag Phone in 1990. The phone offers greater durability and higher power output (up to 3 watts) than conventional phones at the time, such as Motorola DynaTAC and MicroTAC phones themselves, making it popular for truckers, sailors , and people in rural areas. Due to its durability, many examples of this phone still work today.

The Bag Phones are a derivative of the Motorola Tough Talker series of removable phones, which in turn are derived from the DynaTAC car phone introduced in 1984. All these phones have a modular design in which the handset attaches to the transceiver, which is then powered. either with a vehicle power system (on a car phone) or battery (in transportation). By reducing the size and weight of transceivers and batteries, and introducing more fashionable leather bags to accommodate them, Motorola can make it easier to market to the average mobile phone consumer, and therefore Bag Phone.

The handset consists of a digital or alphanumeric numerical display with Pwr (indicates the phone is turned on, indicated by a dot in some models), InUse (indicates that the call is in progress), NoSvc (can not receive cellular signals and is unable to make or receive calls), and Roam indicator (accessing mobile system other than your home system), numeric keypad with other buttons for various functions (depending on model), and loudspeaker for ring and hands-free use. It is connected to a transceiver, which also connects connections to detachable "duck rubber" antennas, and power supply headers connected to 12-volt automotive outlets and sealed 12-volt lead-acid batteries. The battery provides up to 2.5 hours of talk time and 48 hours of standby time. All these parts are incorporated in specially designed bags made by Caseworks, Inc. from Chicago, Illinois, or Service Manufacturing Corporation from Aurora, Illinois. The phone can also be installed permanently in the car. The only Bag Phone deviating from this architecture is the Power PAK, which places control and display on transceivers and uses LED displays similar to those used in some DynaTAC and MicroTAC phones.

Immortality

The majority of Bag Cells are operated on the AMPS network, and some special models produced in the late 1990s, dubbed the Digital Concert Series, run on the TDMA network, in addition to AMPS. Since the AMPS and TDMA networks have been extinct since February 2008, the life of all Motorola Bag Bags has ended, and they now only serve as collectibles.

The original Motorola Bag Phone has been replaced by Motorola M800 and M900 Bag Phones, introduced in 2005. Although technically not the same as the original Bag Phone and using a completely different user interface, the M800 and M900 support CDMA and GSM, respectively, and add basic features of modern mobile phones. In addition, they are compatible with the battery for the original Bag Phone.

Design features

While technically everything is similar, Motorola produces many different models of mobile phone bags, different in features and display types. This can be determined by the model number at the bottom of the handset, starting with SCN. Each type of handset also has its own transceiver, marked with model number beginning with SUN. Random phones can be used with random transceivers, but some mismatch may cause unusable functions. For example, inserting 4500 handsets into 3 Transceiver buttons will produce Up/Down, One touch, VOL and STO buttons that can not be used or perform a completely different function. Some transceivers will detect unmatched handsets, and display "LOANER" after power-up.

Most handsets use monochrome LCD displays capable of displaying 7 or 10 digits, with green or orange LED backlights. Better featured phones use 7-digit alphanumeric screens, and offer a color LCD screen as an option.

The color LCD screen uses orange color for alphanumeric display area (red in Digital Concert Series), green for power indicator and InUse, red for indicator NoSvc, and yellow for Roam indicator. While the color look is more appealing, it has some drawbacks. Incandescent lamps are used for back lighting, which not only draws more power, reducing battery life in portable applications, but has a definite lifespan. In addition, the screen can be hard to read in the sun, and when the backlight turns off during battery operation, the indicator becomes barely visible.

The American Series 820 and Power PAK mobile phone models use LED screens.

Carry case

The Motorola Bag Phone is sold in some types of handbags ("bags"), with each model available with one or two types. The earliest bag phone, which uses a large transceiver similar to that used in a Tough Talker transported phone, comes in a large large container, where the transceiver and battery (if any) sit at the bottom of the case, with the handset and mounting of the cup holder installed above. Then the phone bag is available in a smaller upright case, which also contains a side pocket where the battery can be placed.

Other cases available include Soft-PAK, which houses transceivers and batteries in a large pocket beside the handset, and Attachà ©  © Carry Case, which in addition to similar setup with Soft-PAK, contains several pockets for accessories such as pens, day planners, and documentation the phone comes with.

The Dynasty, Meteor, Pulsar, Ambassador II, and American Series AMS833 phones are all available in unique cases containing similar arrangements with Soft-PAK, and a pocket on the outside of the casing, and the phone's name stitched into the casing. The PAK Power Phone comes in a unique case similar to Soft-PAK, with an external zipper bag containing the battery.
