Infection

Flora residents in the mouth of cats include Pasteurella , Staph , Bartonella , and Streptococcus species. Bites from cats develop infections more often than dog bites. Cat teeth are sharp, pointed and can cause deep cuts. After a cat bite, the healing skin usually closes quickly over bites and traps of microorganisms. Cat bites can infect a person by:

  • Cat's scratch, caused by the bacteria Bartonella henselae )
    • Cat's claw disease is a bacterial disease that can be caused by people after being bitten or scratched by a cat. About 40% of cats carry bacteria at some point in their mouths, although kittens younger than 1 year are more likely to have them.

Most cats with this infection show no signs of illness.

  • Hookworm, tubaeforme Ancylostoma, Ancylostoma braziliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala
  • Capnocytophaga canimorsus
  • Pasteurellosis caused by the genus of bacteria Pasteurella
    • Pasteurellosis is a bacterial disease associated with animal bites and scratches. Pasteurella is a normal bacteria that also lives in the mouth of a healthy cat. Bacteria usually do not make the cat sick; However, cats may develop abscesses or skin infections in places where they are scratched or bitten by other animals.

In people, pasteurellosis causes painful sores and skin infections. In severe cases, it can cause widespread infections and may even affect the nervous system. Rabies, a fatal neurological disease in animals and humans, is caused by a virus. Animals and humans are most often infected through bites from mad animals. Infected cats may have various signs, but most often have sudden behavior changes and progressive paralysis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is assisted by obtaining a history of circumstances surrounding the bite. When the bite is experienced, the location of the bite, and examination of the bite are recorded. The person may have drainage from the site of the bite. They may also have a fever. Swelling may also occur. Because the wound from the bite may have healed through the puncture, the wound may be opened and explored. The site is drugged before exploration of the wound to be checked for damage. Neurovascular status is assessed. Immune status may determine treatment as well as the presence of transplanted tissue or organs, rheumatic diseases, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and sickle cell disease. Swollen glands (lymph nodes) and red lines radiating upwards can be seen.

Diagnosis of cats with rabies is evident by observing cats. Cats with rabies may also seem agitated, panting, and attack animals, humans, or other objects. Animals with rabies usually die within days of appearing ill. Cat vaccination can prevent rabies from being transmitted by cats through bites. If a cat is suspected of being infected with rabies, the person begins treatment with a rabies vaccine.

Treatment

The first step in the treatment includes washing and then irrigating the bite wound. Often tetanus injections are prescribed. If a cat has bitten a cat or other animal and appears to be ill, the cat will benefit from the assessment and possible care of the veterinarian. If there is a low risk that the wound has a low risk of infection, it is sometimes just stitched. A person who has been bitten by a cat with rabies will need special care. Cause infection from cat bites can be prevented immediately. Washing the wound with soap and warm water is recommended. Look for medical help if: if the cat has not been vaccinated against rabies. A tetanus booster is given to the person if it has been more than 5 years since their last tetanus shot. If a cat has bitten someone, and there is no evidence that the cat has been vaccinated against rabies, that person will be treated for rabies infection.

Association with Depression

A 2009 study utilizing association analysis tools on medical records found an association between the terms "cat bite" and "depression." A much larger follow-up study in 2013 used a data set containing 41.2 million classifications of 1.6 million patients to dig deeper into the association. The researchers found that among patients with cat bites, the depression rate was 41.3%, much higher than the general population depression level (8.8%). More than three quarters (85.5%) of 310 patients with depression and cat bites are female, meaning that if a woman is presented with a cat bite, there is a 47.0% chance that she will be diagnosed with depression in her life.

Epidemiology and special populations

More than 400,000 cat bites are reported annually in the US, although the actual number of bites is much higher because many of these bites are less reported. 40 million households in the United States have domestic cats. Data on the number of people bitten or scratched by cats is limited because most of these incidents are not reported; However, 20% -80% cat bites and scratches become infected. Paint-scratch or cat-scratch fever disease, an infection that causes fever and swollen lymph nodes, can develop from cat scratches even if they only damage the skin surface. Based on reports of people being treated for cat bites in hospital, women are most likely to be victims of cat bites and scratches. Because of its smaller shape, children are more likely to be bitten on their head, neck, and face. Adults are more likely to be bitten in the hands and arms. Those who are immunocompromised are more susceptible to infections than cat bites.
